Rocket UniVerse® is an extended relational data server optimized for embedding in vertical applications.
Rocket UniVerse offers a nested relational (MultiValue) data model which means intuitive data modeling and fewer resulting tables. UniVerse V10.3 adds powerful development capabilities to the solid extended relational database.
Robust high-availability capabilities including point-in-time recovery and the ability to recover a single record from a specified file
Efficient encryption of data at rest with flexible encryption key management
Enhanced licensing and authorization process offers streamlined configuration while protecting licensed assets
Includes Rocket UniData and UniVerse Basic Developer Toolkit (BDT), a modern, integrated development and debugging tool for Basic Developers.
Highly scalable, low-cost data management system with many innovative features
Support for Web services client protocols including XML and SOAP
New U2 Web Services Development tool with a configurable SOAP server to quickly create and deploy Web services from BASIC subroutines and UniVerse queries via the industry-standard Web Services Description Language (WSDL)
Includes UniObjects for .NET (UO.NET)—a native, scalable, high-performance API for developing in the Microsoft® .NET framework. Through UO.NET for Compact Framework, this capability is extended to a number of handheld devices.
Robust features for high availability, failover and data replication available
IBM WebSphere® MQ support
National Language Support (NLS) using Unicode standard
Transaction management with support for nested transactions
Broad support for open-standards-based SQL interfaces such as JDBC™, OLEDB and ODBCBenefits
Connection Pooling (CP) enables developers to design and deploy applications that do not use persistent connections to the data server, such as in a Web environment. Connection Pools are authorized separately and do not consume data server licenses.
UV/Net offers local access to data on remote UniVerse servers.
Transaction Logging provides warm-start recoverability in case of system or media failures.
Data Replication provides an automatic and reliable way to deliver read-only copies of UniVerse files to other UniVerse systems.
Automatic Data Encryption offers a powerful yet simple means of protecting sensitive data with few or no application changes. Data can be encrypted at the column (field) level or by encrypting entire records, while access is granted at the user or group level for role-based security.
Device Licensing for Server Edition offers the ability to customize the number of connections per device such as a user's PC. This provides greater flexibility when fewer than 10 connections per device are required and the additional value of Enterprise Edition is not an alternative.
Rocket UniVerse® 10.3 — delivers a powerful new development tool, mobile API support, numerous security enhancements, and consumability improvements for Web Services.
Developers
UniVerse 10.3 now includes the Rocket UniData and UniVerse Basic Developers Toolkit (BDT), an integrated, graphical development environment. BDT, a set of Eclipse plug-ins, gives programmers the ability to explore Rocket UniVerse resources, and edit, compile and debug code in the UniVerse Basic language that supports their server-side business logic. This powerful and fun-to-use tool, speeds programmer productivity and fosters the use of programming best practices.
UniObjects for .NET now comes in size small. That is, Rocket UniObjects for .NET Compact Framework (UO.NET for CF) is available on the UniVerse 10.3 client CD, allowing developers to deliver downloadable applications on the Windows CE platform, including smart phones, PDAs and more.
Check out the U2 Developer Zone for more information on development tools and APIs.
Security and encryption
UniVerse Automatic Data Encryption (ADE), introduced at UniVerse 10.2, lets you configure and automatically encrypt data at rest. At this release, we added “wallet” support to help automate key activation, making it easier to manage large numbers of users and enabling access from standards-based interfaces that do not support passing of authentication tokens. UniVerse 10.3 also enhances administration of ADE by allowing keystore and metadata to be exported in order to facilitate migration and system recovery.
The UniObjects for .NET API, leveraging the introduction of SSLStream class, supports secure client/server communications via the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol.
With today's complex world of computing, application users have access to multiple software systems. This can make life more challenging for system administrators and users as they struggle to manage multiple userids and remember multiple passwords while preserving security. At UniVerse 10.3, support for the combination of Pluggable Authentication Module (PAM) technology with Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), simplifies access and management tasks. UniVerse native clients such as the UniObjects family, standards-based clients such as JDBC, OLE DB and more, and the database clients that use these interfaces (e.g. Extensible Administration (XAdmin) Tool, U2 Web Services Developer (WSD) and U2 Basic Developer Toolkit (BDT) ) can now leverage PAM system calls in conjunction with LDAP to access a central repository for authentication. This allows system administrators to configure UNIX and Linux boxes to look in one place to authenticate userids and passwords, no matter how many separate systems their users need to access. And it allows users to remember one userid and one password to be used on all of their systems. This is truly a smarter use of time and resources for all.
Web Services Deployment
You can quickly and easily turn your UniVerse queries and subroutines into Web Services using the existing Rocket U2 Web Services Developer Tool (WSD). The new Web Services Deployment Wizard, available at UniVerse 10.3, speeds deployment by generating a package to deploy your Web services on your production platform.
